Breaking the Headache Cycle: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is Helping Migraines and Cluster Headaches
For millions of people, migraines and cluster headaches can be more than just headaches—they can be life-disrupting neurological conditions that interfere with work, family life, and everyday activities. While medications remain the standard treatment, researchers have explored how hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can offer another option for people who continue to struggle with symptoms.
Several clinical reports have produced encouraging results.
What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
HBOT works by having patients breathe 100% Medical Grade oxygen under slightly elevated pressure.
That pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into the blood plasma at much higher levels than normal. Once that happens, oxygen can reach tissues that may not be getting enough blood flow.
Researchers believe HBOT may help certain headache disorders by improving oxygen delivery and promoting healthy blood vessel regulation.
Decades of Documented Migraine Relief
One of the earliest studies investigating HBOT for migraines was published in Headache in 1995. Researchers found that patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen experienced significantly greater migraine relief than patients receiving standard oxygen therapy, with results reaching statistical significance (p < 0.05).
More recently, a 2019 case report followed a 23-year-old woman with an 11-year history of treatment-resistant migraine with aura. Prior to HBOT, she experienced severe migraines approximately three times per month. After beginning a series of HBOT sessions, she reported only one mild migraine during the entire treatment period, with dramatically reduced pain and no missed days of work or school.
While a single case report cannot predict outcomes for everyone, the results highlight HBOT's potential as an adjunctive option for patients whose migraines have not responded adequately to conventional therapies.
Relief from Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are often described as some of the most painful headaches a person can experience. Researchers have also explored whether HBOT may help interrupt these attacks.
In a 1993 clinical study, 6 of 7 patients with episodic cluster headaches experienced interruption of an active headache attack during HBOT treatment. Researchers also found that attack duration was significantly reduced compared with pretreatment episodes (P < 0.01). In half of the responders, the entire cluster period ended following treatment, while others remained headache-free for several days afterward. Patients receiving placebo treatment did not experience these benefits.
These findings suggest HBOT may provide both immediate symptom relief and, potentially, short-term prevention of future attacks in some individuals.
What Does the Research Mean for You?
The published research offers an encouraging new perspective particularly for patients who continue to experience symptoms despite medication and lifestyle interventions.
Studies have demonstrated:
Significant migraine relief compared with standard oxygen therapy
Reduced migraine frequency and severity in treatment-resistant cases
Rapid interruption of cluster headache attacks
Significant reductions in cluster headache attack duration
Potential short-term prevention of recurring headache episodes
The Bottom Line
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy continues to be studied as a tool for managing difficult-to-treat migraines and cluster headaches. Existing research suggests HBOT is offering meaningful benefits for some patients seeking additional options beyond traditional treatments.
