HBOT for Decompression Sickness
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the primary and most effective treatment for decompression sickness (the "bends"). When divers, miners or other individuals experience rapid pressure changes, nitrogen bubbles can form in the bloodstream and tissues, causing potentially serious symptoms.
This increased pressure helps to:
Reduce the size of nitrogen bubbles in the body
Force more oxygen into the bloodstream and tissues
Improve oxygen delivery to damaged or oxygen-starved tissues
Constrict blood vessels to reduce swelling
Accelerate the elimination of nitrogen from the body
The increased oxygen and pressure work together to rapidly resolve symptoms and prevent long-term complications from nitrogen bubble formation. Prompt administration of HBOT is crucial, with the best outcomes achieved when treatment begins as soon as possible after the initial symptoms appear.
Note: when left untreated, decompression sickness can result in additional damage to body systems, which requires a longer protocol.
